In a repeat of the previous year, UAE Team Emirates once again marked a double triumph to conclude the Italian road season. Having finished as the runner-up to his Swiss teammate Marc Hirschi in the 2022 Veneto Classic, Davide Formolo reversed the tables this time around, claiming victory in the third edition of the one-day race.

HOW THE VENETO CLASSIC WENT
While the organizers had changed the route of the Giro del Veneto this time, the course of the Veneto Classic remained unchanged. After about 80 hilly kilometers, the race went on a first circuit to be ridden four times, which was 12.6 kilometers long and included the 2.6 kilometer long and 6.3 percent steep climb to La Rosina.

Marco Frigo (Israel - Premier Tech), Joey Rosskopf (Q36. 5) and Michael Belleri (Biesse - Carrera) initially dominated the action as a breakaway trio before Milan Menten's (Lotto - Dstny) attack in the final 50 kilometers initiated a chase group that included Formolo, Stefano Oldani (Alpecin - Deceuninck), Natnael Tesfatsion (Lidl - Trek) and Erik Fetter (Eolo - Kometa), who connected with the leaders with 33 kilometers to go.
In the cobblestone ramp after La Tisa, Formolo, Oldani and Tesfatsion shook off their companions, who were shortly after placed by the peloton that was still around 50 riders strong. The leading trio received reinforcements a little later from Anthon Charmig (Uno-X), Benoit Cosnefroy (AG2R Citroën) and Formolo's teammate Matteo Trentin. With 22 kilometers to go, however, Israel - Premier Tech led the chasers but then the sextet around the two UAE pros closed in.
FORMOLO STALKS WITH SEVEN KILOMETERS TO GO
On the final traverse of the La Tisa climb, Cosnefroy briefly split the peloton with a massive increase in pace, but on the approach to Diesel Farm, the lead group grew to around 40 riders again. With no less than four riders, Uno-X led the field into the penultimate climb of the day. On the narrow and extremely steep gravel passage up to the Diesel Farm, Zana pulled away, Hirschi could only follow for a short time and was eight seconds behind Zana at the apex, but the Swiss champion caught up with him again at the end of the descent, which also led over gravel.
With seven kilometers to go, Hirschi's teammate Formolo also moved up to the front with Kron and Samuele Battistelli (Astana Qazaqstan) breathing down his neck a few seconds behind. After neutralizing an attack by last year's winner, Zana had to let Formolo go on the last short climb of the day.
